A team of archaeologists from Brickford have uncovered what is believed to be a Roman burial in land along Hill Road.

This is the first burial found in the city although Roman pottery has been found regularly in the last 30 years. However, the archaeologists believe that this burial is of an important figure as the grave contained not only the skeleton, but also a shield, sword and a goblet – which are items often buried with people of status, for them to take with them in the next life.

Museum Curator, Archie Facte hails the find as important for Brickford:

“Never before have Roman grave goods been found in Brickford. The quality and quantity of these items suggests that this grave was for someone important and in turn suggests that Brickford could have been a key part of the Roman Empire. The items will be sent for cleaning and will be preserved in the city museum”.

The Roman Empire controlled Great Britain from around 43 AD to 410 AD.

Monorail route extension officially opens on 8th February.

Brickford’s mass transit system gets yet another boost this week as the hugely successful monorail service is extended.

The extension will enable commuters to travel from the airport, train station and outskirts, right into the heart of the city.

The Lord Mayor, Roger Hibbert, officially opens the new passenger route and station in Hammond Street on Monday 8th February 2010 at 2pm.

Yesterday afternoon, residents in Greenview were host of a surprise visitor of the porcine kind.

Never before had a pig been seen wandering around Brickford, and its mystery arrival caused a stir when it was found munching its way through the garden of 7 year old Justin Trouble.

It is believed that the pig escaped from an abattoir some 8 miles away in Bacon Bagel, although it is not known for certain as it bears no tag.

The pig, nicknamed ‘Porky’, has been captured by a local vet, and is temporarily being kept at Brookview Farm.

Snow has been spotted in Brickford for the first time this winter. Strange thing is, there has been no snowfall!

Snow on 3rd December?

An un-named teenager has been spotted over the last three days playing with snow. In fact, a snowman has appeared in one quiet street.

Brickford prepares itself for what has become known as the oddest time of year – normally associated with a sudden increase in the population, which experts are baffled by.

What’s next? If you spot anything odd appearing in Brickford in the run up to Christmas, let us know!

Derelict warehouse on Station Road

Former Anderson's Clothing Company site

Yesterday the city council revealed that a ‘brownfield site’ on Station Road has been ear-marked for re-development.

The site is currently home to a derelict warehouse that was formerly used by Anderson’s Clothing Company before it was destroyed by fire in 2004. It has since become unsafe and a home for vermin.

Plans have been submitted as part of a planning application to re-develop the site into a cargo distribution centre. This expands on recent investments made in air and rail freight capacity.

It is estimated that the cargo centre will bring a number of new jobs to Brickford, as well as create one of the largest distribution centres in the region.
